MARS

11 Jan 2008

Mars is still high and bright but its getting smaller by the week and you can just about make out
the phase again as we swing past it.

Seeing: Average.

Equipment : ETX-125, Philips SPC 900 Webcam, 2 x Barlow, IR Filter. Processed in Registax and Photoshop.

Boher, Limerick, Ireland.
Seeing: Average.

Equipment : 20'' Obsession, Philips SPC 900 Webcam, 5 x Barlow, IR Filter. Processed in Registax and Photoshop.

Again Dave and I gave Mars a go tonight. Thanks again to Dave for the chance to do this.
It was totally freezing on the hill but of course the seeing as that much better for it.

As for the detail, maybe a 3XBarlow would be better as 5X seems a bit too high for the seeing conditions.
An improvement on the first image I think but it still could be better.
Here is the actual view at the time for comparison.

The colour seems better. I've put a Hubble Image next to it for comparison.

21 Dec 2007
12:10 AM
Limerick City, Ireland.
Seeing: Poor.

Equipment : 20'' Obsession, Philips SPC 900 Webcam, 5 x Barlow, IR Filter. Processed in Registax and Photoshop.

This shot is really just a test shot to see just what kind of image could be captured using a large aperture scope,
and in this case they don't get much bigger (for regular amateurs anyway!)
than a 20'' Dobsonian with ago navis go-to thanks to Dave Lillis.

Here is a composite showing the actual view of Mars at the time of imaging.
Many of the main features are visible.
The Mars overlay for Google earth is a great little tool for this.

The shot bellow was taken with the same set up but with a 2X Barlow instead of the 5X.
The image is obviously a lot sharper because of the reduced magnification but with good seeing the
5X should do very well.

03.12.07 - 3rd attempt at Mars.

There is a nice bit of detail now visible on Mars as its very near opposition.
The seeing tonight was unreal. 10/10 for sure.

03.12.2007 - This is my second go at imaging Mars.

A big improvement from the first as the planet is nearing opposition.

21.08.07 - First attempt at imaging Mars.

It's a tough planet to get any kind of detail on.
It'll be closer and bigger near Christmas so I'll try again around opposition.
